The Bunny Hat Was the Headline
The detention was real. The bunny hat was the art director's idea.
CNN
A five-year-old in a Spider-Man backpack. The real fight was over who ICE was actually there to arrest.

What they sold
January 2026, Columbia Heights, Minnesota. CNN's headline: "5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos taken by ICE in Minnesota." The photo of an agent holding a preschooler's backpack went everywhere. The story as told: ICE came for a little boy.
What the record shows
Straight receipts. Federal agents arrested the boy's father, Adrian Conejo Arias, on January 20, 2026. The boy and his father were flown to the Dilley family detention center in Texas. A judge ordered them released, and they were home by February 1. So yes, the child was held. That part is not a hoax.
What is disputed is the frame. ICE's deportation chief told reporters the father was the target, said he ran and left the child in the vehicle, and said an officer stayed with the boy. DHS says the mother refused to take custody. The family's lawyer says they came legally and applied for asylum in December 2024. CBS reviewed court records showing their case was pending. The framing is what's in dispute, and CNN's own explainer said what led ICE to take the boy "remains in dispute."
The damage
FNN analysis: a five-year-old in a bunny hat is a perfect weapon, because nobody reads paragraph twelve. When the photo is the story, the target, the flight and the custody question all get buried. That's how you end up with Democrats at 51% trust in media and Republicans at 8% (Gallup, 2025). Two tribes, two different stories, one photo.
Closer
The kid was real. The framing was a casting call. Read past the photo.
