Morning Joe's Crystal Ball
Morning Joe looked into the crystal ball and saw a cable segment.
MSNBC
A cable host predicted executions in a second Trump term. Nearly two years in, the prediction has not come true.
As printed on the graphic:
If Reelected, Trump Will Execute People Hoax
What they sold
November 2023. On MSNBC's Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough said that if Trump won again, he would imprison and execute his enemies and drive others out of the country (Breitbart transcript, The Right Scoop). This was MSNBC, not CNN. Later commentary, not the original claim: CNN ran an analysis around the same time, "Trump's extreme rhetoric conjures the prospect of a presidency like no other" (November 14, 2023).
What the record shows
The prediction didn't come from nowhere. On September 22, 2023, Trump posted on Truth Social that Gen. Mark Milley's calls to China were so egregious that in times gone by, "the punishment would have been DEATH!" (CNN, The Atlantic). Milley said publicly that the post disrespected the military (CNN). That's real, and it's fair to condemn it.
But "he will execute people" was a forecast, not a fact. In the second Trump term so far, FNN found no executions of political opponents. Critics have pointed to prosecutions and investigations of opponents, and that's a separate, real debate, still DISPUTED and still in the courts. A pundit's prophecy presented as analysis is still a prophecy.
The damage
FNN analysis: when cable hosts predict executions and they don't happen, the audience learns to ignore warnings, including the ones that deserve attention. Gallup's 2023 trust: 32%, with 39% "none at all."
Closer
The DEATH post was real. The executions weren't. Stop selling prophecy as news.
