Hamas Said 500. The Forensics Said Rocket.

Hamas said 500 dead, and the first wave of headlines took their word for it.

Major outlets

RECEIPTS CONFIRM(on the first wave of coverage; CNN's later analysis was solid)

The world's front pages ran a terror group's claim within an hour. CNN's own forensic team took it apart in four days.

Hamas Hospital Hoax

CNN's role here was correcting the record, not starting the story.

What they sold

October 17, 2023. An explosion hits the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City. Hamas officials claimed an Israeli airstrike killed about 500 people. Major outlets put the Israeli-strike claim at the top of their front pages and homepages within the hour. Protests broke out across the region, and a Jordan summit with President Biden was canceled.

What the record shows

October 21, 2023. CNN's own forensic team: "Gaza hospital blast: Forensic analysis of images and videos suggests rocket was cause, not Israeli airstrike." The damage was consistent with a malfunctioning rocket fired from inside Gaza, not an airstrike. U.S. intelligence agencies reached a similar conclusion (NBC). October 23: the New York Times published an editors' note saying it had relied too heavily on Hamas's claims. November 26: Human Rights Watch found the blast was most likely caused by a rocket-propelled munition, consistent with a misfired Palestinian rocket.

The 500 death toll came from Hamas and was never independently verified. Credit where due: CNN's investigators did solid work. The failure was the first hours, across the industry.

The damage

FNN analysis: a terror group's casualty claim made the front pages, and it fueled riots before any forensics were done. Gallup's 2023 trust: 32%. The correction was solid. The damage was already done.
