What they sold
2016 to 2019. Cable news ran it nonstop: the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to steal the election. CNN's own receipt: in June 2017, CNN retracted a story linking Trump ally Anthony Scaramucci to a Russian investment fund, apologized, and accepted the resignations of three journalists, including the head of its investigations unit (CNN Money, NYT).
What the record shows
March 2019, the Mueller report: "the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities." Zero conspiracy charges against Trump campaign officials for coordinating with Russia.
December 2019: Inspector General Michael Horowitz found at least 17 significant errors or omissions in the FBI's FISA applications to surveil Trump adviser Carter Page. May 2023: Special Counsel John Durham's report found the FBI opened the full investigation based on raw, unanalyzed and uncorroborated intelligence.
Hedge, because FNN does them: Mueller did document real Russian interference, through social media operations and hacking, and indicted Russian nationals for it. The interference happened. The collusion conspiracy was never established.
The damage
FNN analysis: this was the big one. Gallup trust dropped to 32% in 2016 before rising again, but the long slide never really stopped. 28% by 2025. The agenda: delegitimize an election result for an entire term.
