One awkward arm, a million screenshots. Even the ADL said it wasn't a Nazi salute.

Elon Musk Nazi Salute Hoax
What they sold
January 20, 2025, Capital One Arena. Elon Musk thumps his chest and throws his arm out, twice. CNN replayed it live. HuffPost's headline: "Elon Musk Does 'Odd-Looking' Salute At Trump Inauguration," describing CNN anchors' reaction. CNN's Kasie Hunt said the gesture was evocative of things seen through history (REPORTED). Online, it was a Nazi salute, case closed.
What the record shows
The gesture happened. It's on tape. What it meant can't be proven from a freeze-frame. Musk denied any Nazi meaning. The Anti-Defamation League, whose whole job is calling out antisemitism, posted the same day that it seemed Musk "made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute." Reuters reported the scrutiny and the ADL's view. Critics noted his support for Germany's far-right AfD, and that's a fair part of the debate. But "Nazi salute" as a statement of fact goes past what the evidence can carry.
The damage
FNN analysis: when "Nazi" gets used for a clumsy arm wave, the word loses its force, and real Nazis are the ones who benefit. Gallup: Republicans' trust in media hit 8% in 2025, the first time in single digits. Labeling a hand gesture a hate symbol as fact, live, is how you lose half the country.
Closer
Words like "Nazi" are a nuclear button. Stop mashing it for engagement.
