The Hammer Attack Where the Label Mostly Holds
A rare one where the label mostly holds, and FNN says so.
Media-wide
The attacker was convicted twice. His own testimony makes the "hoax" label hard to defend.

MAGA Assaulted Paul Pelosi Hoax
What they sold
October 28, 2022. David DePape breaks into the Pelosis' San Francisco home and hits Paul Pelosi, 82, with a hammer. Within hours, coverage framed it as right-wing political violence driven by MAGA conspiracy theories. Critics on the right (Breitbart's catalog) said the media rushed to frame MAGA before the facts were in. Meanwhile, some on the right pushed lurid, baseless rumors about the attack, which made the coverage worse on both sides.
What the record shows
FNN follows the receipts even when they cut against the list. November 2023: DePape testified in his own federal trial. CNN reported that he described conspiracy theories and political beliefs, said he was going after Nancy Pelosi over what he called lies about "Russiagate," and said Paul wasn't his target. A federal jury convicted him of assault and attempted kidnapping, and he got 30 years (Washington Post, May 2024). A state jury later convicted him too, and he was sentenced to life without parole (AP, SF District Attorney).
So the "MAGA-style conspiracy motive" framing largely held up, based on the attacker's own words. Early-hours certainty was premature. The conclusion wasn't wrong.
The damage
FNN analysis: both sides used this attack. The press framed it before the evidence was in, and right-wing rumor mills invented lurid fiction. An 82-year-old man was nearly killed. Gallup's 2022 trust: 34%.
Closer
The attacker's own testimony beat every pundit. Even when the media's call turns out right, it gets there by sprinting past the evidence. Slow down.
