The Secret Server Was Marketing Spam
The secret server was sending marketing spam. Collusion by coupon.
Slate
"Trump's server talks to a Russian bank" went viral before the 2016 election. The FBI looked and found nothing.

The Alfa Bank Hoax
What they sold
October 31, 2016. Slate publishes a story asking whether a Trump Organization server was secretly communicating with Russia's Alfa Bank. Hillary Clinton's campaign promoted it the same night. Other outlets chased it, and the theory lived on for years afterward. National Review later catalogued the journalists who pushed it.
What the record shows
The FBI looked into the data and concluded by early February 2017 that there was no secret channel (Just Security). Technical analyses found the traffic was consistent with hotel-marketing email infrastructure and possible spoofing, not a covert line.
Special Counsel John Durham charged Michael Sussmann, a lawyer whose firm represented the Clinton campaign, with lying to the FBI when he brought the Alfa Bank allegations to the Bureau. On May 31, 2022, a jury found him not guilty (Reuters, NYT). FNN states the verdict plainly: Sussmann was acquitted. Durham's 2023 report still laid out how the allegations got to the FBI and how weak they were.
So the server story fell apart. The prosecution over it didn't stick either. Both are on the record.
The damage
FNN analysis: a campaign-boosted technical rumor, a week before an election, filed in the same drawer as "collusion." Gallup's 2016 trust: 32%, the lowest reading up to that point.

The secret Russian line was hotel spam. One week before the vote. The lie is the product.
