October 2020. The New York Post publishes emails from a laptop Hunter Biden left at a Delaware repair shop. Twitter blocks the story. On October 19, Politico runs: "Hunter Biden story is Russian disinfo, dozens of former intel officials say." The letter, signed by 51 former intelligence officials, said the emails had "all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation." Joe Biden cited the letter in the final presidential debate. Much of the mainstream press treated the Russia frame as the story.

The letter itself admitted the signers had no evidence of Russian involvement and didn't know if the emails were genuine. Politico's headline left that out.

March 2022: the New York Times reported that emails from the laptop cache had been authenticated by people familiar with the federal investigation. March 30, 2022: the Washington Post's forensic review verified thousands of emails using cryptographic signatures, while noting that some data had been accessed and altered. June 2024: federal prosecutors used the laptop as evidence in Hunter Biden's gun trial, and he was convicted, then pardoned by his father in December 2024. A 2023 House Republican interim report said the letter was organized partly to help the Biden campaign. That's a partisan report, so treat it as REPORTED.

FNN analysis: this is the template. A true story, buried before an election, under the authority of "intelligence officials" who said in their own letter they had no evidence. Gallup's 2020 trust: 40%, with a then-record 33% "none at all." The agenda served itself.
